Karla Caves

Karla Caves, Karli, Maharastra- India.

Karla caves is a Buddhist rock cut shrines ,caves situated on old Mumbai-Pune highway, at Karli village near Famous tourist destination Lonavala. This place is very easy to find and easy to reach.

From highway you can see view of caves . You can enjoy reaching there by lots of steps or you can cover more than half distance by your vehicle with available road.
In rain season you can enjoy waterfall there, and in other season a greatview from mountain, nearby villages, lakes and farms.
Inside caves you can see combination of art, engineering and devotion(religion).
There is also front space occupied for temple of  Ekveera devi (a Local Godddess) formed by devotees , mainly Koli community of Mumbai.

What To See -
                           By visting these caves you will be witness the glory of ancient architecture ,Buddhist monks way of living in varshawas . You can see different posture statues well crafted rock cuts rooms ,pillars ,stupas, carving on pillars, inscription on pillars.
There is a huge chaytyagruha (prayer hall, a place where symbolic, lord buddha devoted by monks and devotees).
There is viharas and dwelling places of cave monks.
There is an Ashokan pillar at enterance , you can see rarely, at other caves.

History -  
                These shrines (caves) was not built in single period, it was developed over the period, strted from 2 nd century BC to 5th century BC.
For its construction ,contribution of money from local ,allover india and from out side india (greek) recieved. At some places on cave wall yavan donar names also written.
These cave formation was during the era when Buddhism was on high in India. You can notice nearby villages also in the name related to buddhism.
These caves belongs to early Buddhist school Mahasanghika.

How To Go -
                        This place is very easy to assess and reach, it is 58 km from pune , means required 1 and half hour.From Mumbai it is 93 km. required 2 hrs.
You can travell there by train ,car or bike.
With this cave you can also cover either one fort (lohagad and visapur fort) or Bhaje caves, exactly opposite.
