Bhaje Caves, Lonavala-Maharastra



                         If you have a little bit interest in ancient structures, methods and monuments, this is a right place for you to visit.
Bhaje caves is a 22 roct cut caves with one chaityagruha. It was cunstructed in 2nd century BC, that means nearabout 2200 years ago, as a place of resting and medicating for Buddhist Monk.
As Buddhism devided into different classes ,it belongs to Hinyana class (panth).
It is protected as a national monument by, Archaeological department of India.

What To See-
                  Instead of seeing I will say you feel. Here you can feel sound of silence. Feel chanting.
Beside this, There is Chaityagruha the main prayer hall with solid stupa as a symbolic Buddha ,where Buddha was worshiped by monks and followers.


Enterance of this chaityagruha well crafted with wooden horseshoe arched.Rock pillars ,with inscription and carved figures ,both side looks supporting the roof .
There are many stupas, pillars and walls inscribed the name of donars and monks.Chaitya gruha has some Buddha images also.

There are inside and outside total 14 stupas there ,dedicated to monks who died there. These stupas on the relics of that monks. Such type of tomb like stupas you rarely found in other caves.

If you visit in mansoon then you can enjoy waterfalls ,one at bottom at caves (on the way road) ,and another at near the caves.
From here you can also see view of Lohagad fort.

History - 
                As most of the caves in this region, these caves are carved in basolt rock, 2200 years ago, nearby in 2nd century BC.
This is on important trade route at that time, that was Arabian sea eastward to Deccan plateau.
 Name of donar, inscription in chaityagruha is Maharathi Kosikiputa Vihnudata.
Name of monks ,inscription on stupas are, Ampinika, Dhammagiri, and Sanghdina.

One carved figure in cave shows woman playing, Tabala. That shows ,Tabala is a long back history in ancient India.


How To Go -
                      It has a very simple route, it is on old pune - Mumbai highway. It is near to Malavali railway station.
From Lonavala it is just 6 km, and from Pune it is just 45 km.
You can go from Malavali station ,through fields in a way as a trekking, or vehicles can directly go at bottom of cave ,with well parking arrangement.
